Project Zimbabwe: Amai Theresa Skills Centre

Introduction
The Zimwomen Association of Northampton, is pioneering a community outreach program which is geared towards providing young people in remote villages in Zimbabwe with a skills exchange program. Our project will see the collaborative efforts of University students across the United Kingdom, starting with The University of Northampton, travelling to the skill centre where they will be based within local communities. This youth empowerment program is targeted at disadvantaged youths, ages 16 to 25 who are not in formal education. This mission is inspired by the works of a local heroine Amai Theresa, who clothed, fed and nurtured many young children under her caring hands. In memory of her relentless efforts, the Ekhaya project strives to continue to see the growth of underprivileged youths, and enable this generation to transform and re-build a better future for themselves and their community.

Our Mission
"Advancing the education and independence of underprivileged youth in Africa, through the exchange of practical and technical skills within the community. "

Statement

“Advancing the education and independence of underprivileged youth in Africa, through the exchange of practical and technical skills within the community. “

Objectives
- Provide technical skills training which would enable African youth to better utilise the limited resources at their disposal for purposes of trade or entry into employment within the community.

- Disseminate an exchange program that encourages cultural networking and sharing of practices that will benefit all participants.

- Unite the African youth towards a common mission of alleviating poverty in their respective countries and communities, and striving to use their skills and     capabilities to be active contributors to the socio-economic development of their regions.

Plan of Action
A selection of University students will be afforded the opportunity to travel to the centre in Zimbabwe where they will be partnered with local participants to engage in programs ranging from 2-4 weeks. The University students will be required to lead various workshops in the key focus areas abovementioned. Our first fundraising initiative was Strictly Come Dancing For Africa which was held at the Royal and Derngate on 18th September, and this will become an annual fundraising event for the project. We will adopt sponsors and patrons for this project from the UK and in Zimbabwe who will support the initiative through whatever means as required.

Fundraising aims
£300 could buy 80 textbooks for children desperate to learn.
£800 could pay activity supplies for the various workshops.
£1,200 could buy all food supplies for program participants.
£3,400 could pay for 30,000 litre water storage tanks and guttering, giving them enough water to last through times of drought.
£10,000 could pay to start building and furnishing the workshop rooms.

Conclusion
With your support, we believe that together we can empower and motivate the future generation and transform their lives helping them make a positive difference.
