FGM Event by the Hidden Scars Project
On Saturday 18 July 2015 our young volunteer Bethel held her first event on FGM at the central library. Among the speakers were Northamptonshire police, Northamptonshire County Council, Integrate Bristol, Zimwomen Northamptonshire, Northampton's children safeguarding board & Exodus Law The event was covered by BBC Radio Northampton and Inspiration FM. Multicultural Festival 4 July 2015
The multicultural festival was held on Saturday 4th July 2015 on Northampton's market square. The different communities were able to showcase their culture, work and initiatives to other community organisations as well as the wider community. We had various activities including Russian dancing, English folk dance, Ceilidh dance, African dancing, Capoeira, Gospel singers, French singing, Dutch singing, Panam Flute playing, Soul/Funk band. We had participation from the Malaysian, Palestinian, English, Vietnamese, Irish, Indian and African communities and some fantastic food. The Umbrella Fair organisation kindly lent us much needed tables and chairs. Our special thanks to Northampton Community Foundation for their help in enabling us to hold this event. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and look forward to working again with you. A spectacular exciting evening of African themed ballroom & Latin dance fused with African moves. Zimwomen Association shared some African folk story telling with pupils at Simon De Senlis school this morning. The school is doing the project as part of the Enchanted Kingdom unit. Pupils and staff gave us a warm welcome & we had a great time. Volunteer news
One of our volunteers Lindiwe recently received a placement on the community radio station, Inspiration FM. Lindiwe met the manager of the radio station at one of our recent events. We are delighted at the news. Lindiwe will gain valuable skills on her placement. We wish her the best of luck. Social Enterprise for Young People
Zimwomen Association have created a social enterprise for young people. A group of young entrepreneurs with a variety of business and concepts will be setting up a trade fair in October. If you would like to know more about this venture please contact us. May 2015
![]() Hidden Scars is a project aiming to raise awareness and tackle the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Northampton. Through the project the hidden scars team will be holding events in the community to raise awareness so that people can be informed. Hidden scars will support people who have been affected by female genital mutilation. We can provide assistance and we can also direct people to the right organisation or institution according to what they need.

Africa Day Celebrations
The Africa Day Celebrations on 25 May 2014 were a great success, a well attended event with great performances and brilliant décor. The event also paid tribute to the great Nelson Mandela. Multicultural Festival receives funding
Northamptonshire Community Foundation and Northampton Borough Council awarded £3,000 towards the multicultural festival.

Fundraising For a Minibus!!
We need your support to buy a minibus. Please help us raise £30,000 to buy a minibus which will last for years to come.
The minibus will be used on a daily basis to transport volunteers, young people, adults and children to various venues and activities including family support and other projects.

Zimwomen Association will be attending a health and wellbeing event at the Guildhall in Northampton on Friday. The event takes place from 12pm-4pm. Please come along for information and advice from health experts and a variety of stallholders.
We will also join the Women's Forum to demand justice for all survivors of gender violence.
You are invited to Dance, Sing and Rise for Justice on Northampton Market Square at 12:30.
Please wear something red.

Palestine women's visit to Northampton March 2014
Northampton Al-Bireh (Palestine) Friendship Association (NABPFA), which is organising an unofficial town twinning between Northampton and the town of Al-Bireh on the West Bank (Palestine). We are bringing a group of Palestinian women to Northampton. The project is called 'Women in Action'. It is intended to bring young women together, and specially to link women's organisations in Northampton and London with those on the West Bank.
Zimwomen Association is looking forward to meeting and making friends with the ladies.

Tree Planting in Corby on 29 March 2014Event postponed due to bad weather
Zimwomen Association will be attending a tree planting event in Corby on 29 March 2014. The event is part of a Humana People to People worldwide tree-planting programme to plant 14 million trees in 2014, far 7 million trees have been planted in Humana projects around the world. Photos are displayed of the recent tree-planting action in Zambia (in which they planted 30,000 trees in two weeks), as well as one of the planting site on the Bulwick Estates which features Birgit Soe (Managing Director of Planet Aid UK) and John Hadley, the contractor responsible for the on-going maintenance of the area for the next three years. If you wish to join us on the day please let us know asap and whether you prefer a morning or afternoon session or the whole day if preferred. We will be planting a mixture of oak trees, small leaf lime trees and birch trees. The planting will begin at approximately 8.30am and will finish at 4pm with a half an hour break for lunch at 12 o’clock. You will need to dress appropriately, according to the weather conditions on the day, and that you wear good, sturdy comfortable boots. We also ask that you bring along the following items: Gardening gloves, spade (optional), a packed lunch. Please contact us asap to confirm your interest in helping us. |

Multicultural Fashion Show & Festival
Multicultural Festival 26 April 2014
Preparations have began for next year's multicultural festival which will combine the annual multicultural fashion show with daytime entertainment to include a wide variety of music from the diverse cultures of Northampton. A group of University of Northampton students will be helping with the organisation of the event.
There will be music, singing and dancing from various community groups and individuals as well as a variety of stalls with unique food and a variety of cultural items for display and sale.
The multicultural festival raises money to go towards the mayor's charities and next year's funds will go the the Les Marriott, the mayor's chosen charity Caring & Sharing Trust.
The evening will feature a fashion show with a wide mix of cultural fashion items. More information will be updated on the events page.

We are honoured to be having Karen Johnson as a special guest at the Young Black Achievers' Awards.
Karen is a former model, was the director of a modelling agency and acting school and has also worked as a cabin crew member, these are a few of her accomplishments as well as juggling her life as a mum of 3 wonderful children.
She is well travelled having worked in Europe, Africa and the middle east.
Despite personal hardships she's always maintained a positive outlook and is using her personal experiences to empower women as well as highlight domestic abuse issues.
She is also multi-lingual. She is a very charitable lady and helps many causes.
Karen is an ambassador for Broken Films in London and judges many talent and beauty competitions. She was a judge at the The Face Of Africa EU on the 15 October at the 02 arena London. She is also the ambassador for Liverpool Homeless Football Women's Club.

African Drumming & dancing at the Global Dance Celebrations!
Zimwomen were invited to perform at the Umbrella Fair's Global Dance celebration on the 27 September. The ladies gave a wonderful performance of dancing and drumming.

Zimwomen Association in the news again!!
Zimwomen Association attended a climate change event on 26 September as part of the Humana People to People Day.
The event was in Corby and was aimed at raising awareness of climate change as well as launching a tree planting scheme.
Zimomen Northampton have pledged to be part of the tree planting project.

ZimYouth attended a fun packed weekend in Birmingham on 9th & 10th August. The event was organised in partnership with Planet Aid, ZimWomen Association & Africa Youth Arise and was attended by over 40 young people. Some images may be seen on our gallery page.
Past events have included cooking food for the BBC with the Hairy Bikers. We've also worked with Age Concern on an international programme sending hand knitted blankets to old people's homes.

Africa Family Fun Day 24 August 2013

Zimwomen attended the Umbrella Fair on the weekend of 17th & 18th August at the Racecourse in Northampton, where we performed African drumming and dancing. We had a stall at the event.
Zim Youth at Summer Camp

Zim Youth attended a Summer Campfire weekend in Birmingham on 9th & 10th August. The event was organised in partnership with Planet Aid, ZimWomen & Africa Youth Arise.
Over 40 young people and the volunteers from Zimwomen and Africa Youth Arise travelled by coach from Northampton to Birmingham.
The event was hosted by the founders of Planet Aid.
There was drumming and dancing, sports activities, storytelling by the campfire by the poet Dumisenda and workshops. It was a brilliant location, the hosts were very generous and ensured that fun times were had by all.

Volunteers needed at Zimwomen

We need at least 2 office based volunteers and a voluntary youth worker at our Zimwomen Office, The Portfolio Innovation Centre, University of Northampton, Avenue Campus, St George’s Avenue, Northampton, NN2 6JD
If you have any admin experience, good computing and organisational skills we would love for you to come and help us. We also welcome those with little or no experience but who are willing to learn. Part time hours are welcomed to suit.
We are involved in a variety of projects and activities including fashion shows, drumming and dance performances, intergenerational projects such as gardening, we focus on education and re-employment, health and personal well-being by providing training, skills nurturing and development through sports and recreational activities.
If you are interested in joining us please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you

Drumming & Dancing workshop at Northampton School for Girls

Zimwomen performed at the Spinney Hill Theatre Northampton (NSG) on Wednesday 12 June 2013. They entertained a delighted audience with their dancing and African drumming skills and were asked to do an impromptu performance at the interval.
There was much entertaining at the event which was held by Northampton Volunteering Centre as part of their Celebration Concert. Over 200 performers gave their all at this brilliantly entertaining event. NVC School of Life Intergenerational Choir and Royal & Derngate choir performed some wonderful songs including a brilliant rendition of Daft Punk's Get Lucky hit single.
There was much entertaining at the event which was held by Northampton Volunteering Centre as part of their Celebration Concert. High Sheriff's Garden Party
Zimwomen attended Northamptonshire High Sheriff's Garden party on 1st August 2013 where they performed drumming and dancing routines for over 200 guests.

Africa Day Celebrations event![]() The Africa Day Celebrations event on 25 May held at Marriott Hotel were a well attended, successful and fun day.
We had a variety of entertainment including live music from up and coming musicians, fashion shows, dancing, really good food, great speakers. Pauline Long gave an inspirational and heartfelt speech and stayed with us for the evening. We look forward to next year's event which will be even bigger and better. In January 2012 Zimwomen Association collaborated with non profit organisation Planet Aid to raise £5000 towards the cost of planting millions of trees in Zimbabwe. Shoppers were encouraged to donate unwanted clothes which went towards raising the cash for the tree planting scheme. Zimwomen Association also performed their dancing and drumming to entertain shoppers. |
A time of opportunity
The 2011 Northamptonshire Voluntary and Community Sector Conference Groups from around the county attended Northamptonshire's third Voluntary and Community Sector Annual Conference in Kettering on 25 May 2011.
